A power outage is easier to handle when your first steps are already decided: light, information, food safety, warmth, and communication.
First 15 minutes
- Check whether the outage is only your home or the wider area.
- Use flashlights instead of candles where possible.
- Keep fridge and freezer doors closed.
- Check official channels, local alerts, or your energy provider for updates.
- Make sure phones and power banks are in battery-saving mode.
What to prepare before it happens
- Flashlights or headlamps for every household member.
- Spare batteries or rechargeable lights.
- A charged power bank.
- A battery, crank, or USB emergency radio.
- Warm layers and simple food that does not need cooking.
Safety note: never use outdoor grills, generators, or fuel-burning heaters indoors. In an immediate emergency, follow local authority and emergency service instructions.
